About

RHODES COLLEGE’S SUMMER SCHOOL IN LONDON:

This is an intensive four-week study abroad opportunity for undergraduate students interested in learning about British literature, history, art (and more!) from prehistoric through contemporary times.  The courses are taught by American and British professors living on-site at the University of London, Goldsmiths.

All courses are held in the mornings, leaving the afternoons free for scheduled excursions, study, and exploration. Students choose two 4-credit courses for a total of 8 credits. This program is open to all majors!

For Rhodes College students: all courses are transferable to Rhodes  and each will have a Foundation credit attached to it. Students will also receive the F11 Foundation credit for Study Abroad.

For Sewanee, University of the South students: We work with departments and chairs so that students can make sure that these accredited 4-credit courses will transfer in.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON, GOLDSMITHS:

Goldsmiths is a constituent college within the University of London and a large research university specializing in the arts, design, humanities, and social sciences. It has about 5,400 undergraduates and 4,600 graduate students.  The university was opened in 1891 by King Edward VII, and has been part of the University of London since 1904. Goldsmiths is very diverse and nearly 20% of students come from countries outside the UK. The university is best known in the U.K. for its courses and research relating to creativity and culture.

Goldsmiths is situated in New Cross, a highly populated area of south-east London with a considerable art and music scene. New Cross is only 15 minutes away by public transport from the South Bank, where Shakespeare’s Globe, The Barbican, and other attractions are located.  It is only 30 minutes away from most other London tourist attractions. National Rail services run from both New Cross and New Cross Gate to stations across the country.

MORE INFORMATION:

Students will stay in residence halls at the University of London, which will be centrally located for offsite activities. Most meals are provided for us each day; students are also given grocery store vouchers to spend on food for yourself on the days where cooked meals are not provided. This way students have flexibility, not only with their eating and nutrition choices, but also when wanting to sight-see or spend time off campus.

Students are also given a monthly Oyster card (valid for Tube, bus, some boats within London) so that they can travel around London at their convenience and attend group outings/excursions when they are held off campus.

The program begins on the evening of Friday, June 30 (with orientation and dinner) and ends on the morning of Saturday, July 29, when we must be out of the residence halls.
